National Office Conducts Financial Managment
Training for Local Union Representatives

On November 7 and 8, 2002, Local 311 President, Willie L. Alexander and LOcal Treasurer, Ron B. Shepard along with representatives from other Local Unions gathered in Washington D.C. to participate i a two-day training program dedicated to financial management issues that arise at each Local Union.

Led by National Secretary-Treasurer Mark Gardner, the Local officers and representatives discussed a litany of financial issues that are confronted each day by the Local Unions. Special attention was paid to each Union's reporting and disclosure obligation under the federal landrum-Griffin Act and the constitution and legal rules governing every Local Union officer's fiduciary responsibilities for conducting the union's financial affairs. There also were well-received presentations from various experts concerning the accounting, tax, investment, and insurance issues that routinely confront union representatives.

This program was planned earlier this year by the NPMHU Committee on the Future, which urged not only Local Treasurers but also other Local Officers and employees to attend. The lively discussion that occurred throughout the program clearly demonstrates a continuing need for this and similar training programs.
